First Grade: Day 163

Today is Fantastic Friday!

This morning I got the 411 on the “projects” the 5th graders did yesterday and all the candy Isabel was talking about. Each 5th grader is required to do a year end report about a state of their choosing. Their teacher then sets up a “state fair” in the gym with each students state displayed. Each student then gives a small “report” to the rest of the elementary students about the state they choose. The students usually have some kind of food/candy, that comes from the state they report on, to share with the others…
So what Isabel got out of the state reports, was the candy and soda. What state are you talking about?

Isabel did much better on her graded work this week. She only missed a total of 5 answers from all the work turned in. She also improved on her handwriting. You can really tell she slowed down and didn’t rush in getting her work done. Fantastic job!

Each morning when she arrives at class, Isabel has to do a D.L.R. or Daily Learning Review. Each review is different and reviews something that they have already gone over in the school year. Teacher Mrs. B doesn’t send them home until the end of the week with all other graded work for the week.

First Grade: Day 162

Today is Thankful Thursday and it’s P.E. with Mrs. S.

Today, I went with my preschool class on a field trip, to the children’s museum. So after school Isabel had to go into the extended program until I could get back.

P.E. was cancelled again this week due to a 5th grade end of the year “project” in the gym. I didn’t understand what Isabel was talking about this “project” the 5th graders did. Whatever it was, Isabel sure did enjoy it. She got lots of candy and even soda! I’ll need to ask Teacher Mrs. B about it tomorrow…

First Grade: Day 161

Today is Wonderful Wednesday!

Wednesday’s are music class with Mr. G. Today they watched Veggie TalesGideon: Tuba Warrior“. With the DVD featuring “Lance the turtle“, Isabel was singing it into the evening!

Yesterday I mentioned Isabel giving her best friend an award. She worked on it last night and took it to school this morning.

2013-05-22 007_edited-1

She told me that just after they arrived in Chapel yesterday (before Chapel began) she traded seats with a boy sitting next to Ms. M. With the chaos and noise going on around them, Isabel leans over quietly and whispers to Ms. M, “You get the Best friend award.” Ms. M didn’t say a word but her eyes got as BIG as saucers!

Today Ms. M gets her award! Isabel said she placed it on Ms. M’s desk (secretly) before class began. When Ms. M got to her desk, she smiled really big and quietly placed her award away in her folder. When I asked Isabel if she told Ms. M who it was from, she said “No, she knows it’s from me!”

Classwork…

Teacher Mrs. B is moving forward in the area of math until the end of the year. Isabel brought homework home with FRACTIONS on it! I was very impressed! It’s just scratching the surface but Teacher Mrs. B isn’t going to slack in that area now that they are finished with the required stuff!
So awesome!

First Grade: Day 160

Today is Terrific Tuesday, which means it’s Chapel and library.

Today’s Chapel was lead by the school’s Superintendent Mr. J. Isabel said his message was about faith. Mr. J “interviewed” his son and new daughter-in-law, who are now missionaries to Jordan.

Isabel also told me about an award she gave to her best friend, Ms. M before Chapel today! (more about that later…)

Isabel said that the class is finished with their required math for the year. I don’t know if Teacher Mrs. B will just review what they have learned or just continue on or just not do math.

She finished her library book during extended school while I was at a meeting. She got a thicker M. T. H. book and she said she enjoyed it.

First Grade: Day 159

It’s Marvelous Monday!

This week begins 4 1/2 weeks left of school. I am looking forward to spending some time off and hopefully enjoying time outside in the sun. We’ve had a soggy spring so far with only a day here and there with sun. Hopefully more sunny weather is headed our way.

Marvelous Monday means All-School Open. A.S.O. is the Monday morning assembly for announcements and other fun stuff for the week. Isabel said she’s been saving up her “R’s” and today she turned them in, with a total of 12. She didn’t win a “shining R” this week but that’s O.K.

Not much was said after school today about her day. The class celebrated a birthday with red velvet cupcakes. Sounds yummy!

Raised Garden Beds

We have been wanting to add more garden beds to the one (garden bed) that we had last year. So a few weeks ago we headed to the home improvement store to buy a pre-made raised bed. While waiting in line, Gino decided to just make a raised bed himself. So instead of getting a pre-made one we purchased cedar wood to make our own and saved over $50.00 in the process. It also looks nicer and sturdier! Looks awesome!

Gino cut the boards down to the dimensions we wanted and then later we treated the outside of the boards with an eco-friendly stain. Last weekend we put the beds into position and filled the top bed with dirt. This weekend we got more dirt to fill the lower bed and to get both beds ready for planting soon. We also purchased 3 large pots to place around the yard.

2013-05-19 001_edited-1Our new raised bed area looks so great!

Last weekend we purchased some plants as well. We purchased some filler flowers for the area over along the fence where I lost flowers to slugs! I had 14 plants and only 2 survived!!

We also got a beautiful “Let’s DanceMoonlight Hydrangea (which I planted today in the big blue pot) and a Black Lace Elderberry. The elderberry, we haven’t decided where to plant yet, so it’s just sitting in the garden bed for now. The flowers I will probably plant sometime soon, if the rains hold off long enough for me to get out and clean up the area where I am going to plant them.

2013-05-19 003_edited-1

We will fill the area around the beds with rounded stones (bigger then pea gravel).
The area where the standing water is, will have the same stones as well and will be the new spot for the hose reel.

2013-05-19 004_edited-1

Close up of the rounded stones that we placed in front of the raised beds.
Looks great with the paved walkway to the “shed”.

2013-05-19 005_edited-1This area will just be for my new potted hydrangea, can’t wait to see more blooms on it!

When we get the areas all complete, I’ll have to take more photos for now, you can what we’ve been up to for the past several weeks, in between rain showers and sun breaks.
