New Year Bang Or Fizzle

Gino has been saving his leftover fireworks from the 4th of July for just this occasion; New Years Eve!

According to official rules where we live we can light them off between the hours of 6 p.m. and 1 a.m. on New Years Eve. So let the fun begin…

All bundled up because it’s only 24° outside!

Looking way back to see the aerial display.

In between the aerial displays she’s throwing snaps on the ground.
She loves these.

2014-12-31 038_edited-1

Proud of her.
She’s been terrified of sparklers and anything that goes BOOM!

2014-12-31 040_edited-1

Slow going for her and the sparkler.
Starting to give it a little twirl.

They last longer in the colder temperature.

2014-12-31 058_edited-1

Sparks are flying at the end of her gloved hand!

Trying to get all the little ground fireworks to light was a bit difficult.

2014-12-31 105_edited-1

But they can create their own little spark and bang!

Box works.

Light up the night and that’s the end of our show.
I’m going in… my feet are freezing and I can’t feel my nose!

Happy New Year!

Third Grade: Day 68

We started late in the day this morning, it was almost 11:00 a.m. by the time I finally sat down to begin our studies. I was tempted to just take the day off but after prompting from Isabel that we needed to start the day with our Bible lesson. Her prompt got me going for the day!

Our Bible lesson for the day was a good one and can be found in Deuteronomy 30:11-20 and
Acts 2:1-36.

In History and Geography, we have been studying the early American History. We are getting closer to the 13 colonies Independence from Great Britain. We have just finished going through the French and Indian War.

Today was poetry and we learned about Free Verse poems. Our favorite Free Verse poems come from S. Silverstein. We enjoyed reading several of his and others that we found across the internet.

With today being the last day of 2014, for fun, I had Isabel write up a “time capsule” that I borrowed from another website.

Time Capsule worksheet.

With starting so late in the day, we were still able to get everything completed for the day and she was able to work on her tide pool field journal. When she gets the whole thing completed I will try to remember to take some photos.

Third Grade: Day 67

The Bible verse for this week…

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7

Just before our Christmas break, Isabel was given the assignment to write a report about an animal of her choosing.

She picked the dolphin.

My Project 8-001_edited-2

Yesterday, we did some internet research about them. She found out the food they eat, how big they get, how long they live, where they live and some other information about these mammals.

Over the next few days she needs to gather more information and later in the week she needs to write up a a rough outline. Next week she needs to have enough information to write up a rough draft and then write up her report.

If you remember she had to do a similar report last year on a northwest mammal. She picked the porcupine.

One of Isabel’s science books has internet links so that we can further learning and knowledge. Today our links lead us to some fascinating finds.

We watched videos of:

  • barnacles
  • crabs
  • anemones
  • mussels
  • sea snails
  • sea urchins
  • octopus
  • chiton
  • brittle stars

Great stuff and we both learned something.

The dangerous weather situations, we talked about were; hurricanes, typhoons, waterspouts, and tsunami’s.

We talked at great length about tsunami’s and the 2004 Asia Tsunami that happened on December 26th. We watched home videos (no sound) from those that survived the 2004 tsunami.

Third Grade: Day 66

We have gotten right back to work after our Christmas break last week. It was a great time to just relax and spend time together.

This week we are learning about transitions in Bible. In Acts chapters 1-3 we will learn about Jesus telling His followers the need to go out and get others to follow Him.

In Numbers and Deuteronomy we will be learning about the Israelites leadership passing from Moses to Joshua.

The Bible verse for this week…

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7

This week we are continuing the story of…

Johnny Tremain” by E.Forbes, chapters 3 and 4.
Great book, dealing with pride and arrogance.

This week we are starting the book…

The Skippack School” by M.d. A.

In Science we are continuing our learning about the Seas and Oceans. Today we talked about currents, tides and coast lines.

I Love You

With some help from Gino, I was able to get my gift from Isabel hung on the wall today. It looks great and I love the location that Gino picked for me.

Close-up of wall art/frame.
I really do like it.

2014-12-26 003_edited-1

We hung it on the wall right off the dining room/kitchen.
Whenever you walk by, which is often, you will get to see it.

Christmas 2014 – Part 2

With so many photos taken and so many gifts I thought this would be easier…

You can click on each picture to see a larger version of it and then click through each picture along the top. Enjoy!

Christmas 2014 – Part 1

We had a great day here at home. Just the three of us and Daisy.

The day started out cloudy but then the sunny broke through the clouds and grey later in the day.

The tree with gifts.

Gino made breakfast bowls with eggs, sausage, tater tots and milk gravy (so good). After breakfast we gathered in the front room around our tree and heard the Bible reading from Luke 2:1-40 by Isabel.

Even Daisy enjoyed the Christmas reading.

2014-12-25 027_edited-1

She did an awesome job.

Our first gifts to open, were our Christmas stockings that were hanging by the fireplace.

Games (learning) for Isabel.

Lip gloss for Isabel.
Strawberry, vanilla and a mystery flavor that we can’t tell.

Her Christmas ornament for 2014.
A pine cone snowman.

2014-12-25 036_edited-1

For me; lip glosses, face wash wipes, a game and my favorite candies.

This year I got myself two Christmas ornaments. Both made of metal and both very different.

2014-12-25 008_edited-1

My large metal snowflake

2014-12-25 009_edited-1

My beautiful cross.
I might leave this one out and hang it with my other crosses on the wall. It’s to pretty to pack away.
