Walking

This morning Isabel and I made a run to the local thrift store for a drop off of her old clothes and to look for new clothes for her. I was able to get her 2 pairs of shorts and 1 pair of pants. We even got to get in on the stores “June is book month” sale. Isabel received 5 new books (read 2 of them already read) and I got 3. I could have gotten more books but was unsure as to the titles I needed. It was a good day at the thrift store.

Afterward, we stopped by our favorite walking trail for a brisk walk before heading home for lunch with Daddy.

Out on the trial:

Plant life:

These berries were everywhere. The birds were enjoying them as we walked.
We were trying to figure out what they were.

The wild blackberries are just starting to form.

Animal life:

Isabel had to stop and talk with all the dogs (and their owners) walking their “pets”. We saw a Dachshund (named Taffy), a bulldog, a greyhound and several other breeds that I didn’t know.

As we were heading back to the car, Isabel spotted this Garter snake. It was in the middle of the path, apparently taking a little break…

“Is it poisonous?” she asks.
“No, they aren’t poisonous.” I say.
“Do they bite?” she asks.
“Yes, they bite but it can’t hurt you.” I say.
… she pauses…
“Can I touch it?” she asks.
“Yes, you can touch it. If you want to.” I say.

She then reaches out and touches it several times and than…

It springs to action and she jumps about a mile! (woohoo! – that was/is a good laugh)
The snake slithers off back into the woods and Isabel is left saying, “That was so cool!”

While on our walk we spotted this Spotted Towhee. A new bird for us!
Slightly smaller than a robin.
I tried several times to get a picture but the crazy things wouldn’t sit still.

It was a awesome walk, I told Isabel we need to get out there and walk the trail every other day!

Technical Diffuculties

Due to some technical difficulties with our old server, Gino had to move our family blog to a new server. Thus creating a few technical bumps in the road with updating the blog on my desktop computer.

Don’t worry, hopefully soon we will have the issues worked out and I will be back at. When that happens watch out, because I have a whole month of blogging to add. So check back and be ready!

Until then…

Lego Class: Gondola Lift

We were back at Lego class today!

Today’s assignment was to make a gondola lift. After some instruction from Mr. J, the class headed right to work getting all their needed pieces for their lift.

Testing out the “base” of her lift.

2015-04-21 022_edited-1

She’s excited her “base” is working properly.
Now she can build off it to “battle” someone.

2015-04-21 027_edited-1

She added some “claws” or “arms”.
Now she’s looking for balance.

2015-04-21 028_edited-1

Her gondola lift is off!

Isabel’s completed gondola lift.

Now it’s time to battle! The rule is to make your opponent’s little man/girl fall off.

Her “battle” face!

She only “battled” once and it didn’t go so well.

Her “arms” fell off but her little man remained!
Don’t know who the real winner is here but their was a lot of destruction.

Until next week…

Library Trip

Our weekly library trip was a short one. I ran in got my books and ran back out in under 5 minutes, while Gino and Isabel waited for me. We had errands to run and didn’t have time to dwell among the shelves this week.

I got some good ones (least I’m hoping they are) with books from around the time frame that we are in; late 1700’s and early 1800’s.

This book’s illustrations are just beautiful!
I began reading it last night and have enjoyed it.

2015-04-15 014_edited-1

I checked out 2 books about the Star-Spangled Banner and I like the other one better (which I didn’t get a picture of).
I completed reading both of these last night.

I am hoping to read this with Isabel but I will begin reading it myself first.

I haven’t begun to read this one but it looks very interesting and the activities seem easy enough to do with items we already have.

Homeschool Science Class

Today’s class was all about fungi. Tan, brown, white and green fungi. Shaggy, crisp and soft fungi.

The class spent time outside looking for fungi around the center and on the nature trail.

It was also about “Under the Microscope”

The class also spent some time looking and observing items under microscopes. They were then asked to draw pictures of what they saw during their observations.

Isabel’s observations from under the microscope.

After class we headed to the playground for just a few moments before heading home.

The rock on the playground is a great challenge to climb.

2015-04-09 003_edited-1

She had some fungi in her pocket she told me and showed me after climbing down.
She said the smell reminded her of arts and crafts supplies but she couldn’t remember what.

However, on the way home she told me she was surprised that I didn’t smell it. When I told her I could do it at home, she said no. She had left the fungi there at the center. I was a bit bummed that I wouldn’t have a chance to smell it but at least I got a picture.
