Third Grade: Day 74

Today’s class time was spent working on Isabel’s essay on dolphin’s.

She needed to write up a rough draft today. However she didn’t get it finished today. She drags her heels when it comes to writing.

Today was Homeschool Science at the Nature Center. Isabel couldn’t remember what they talked but she told me all about the new kids in class. There are only 5 original (Isabel is one of them) members that have been going since September. 3 have dropped out and the class has gained 5 new members. So the class size is at 10.

Before leaving for the afternoon science class, we did Bible and our daily spelling test.

Tomorrow we will be back to normal class, no animal report work. Any work remaining on her rough draft, she will do over the weekend.

Third Grade: Day 73

Today’s class time was spent working on Isabel’s essay on dolphin’s.

She needed to write up a working outline. I told her it was just like her note cards but with a bit more information but NOT with complete sentences. She was a confused on that part and ended up writing sentences. Oh, well. With practice in the future, she’ll get the hang of it. Tomorrow she will be writing up her rough draft and hopefully writing up her final paper on Friday. If not there is always homework and the weekend!

We also did Bible this morning and our daily spelling test.

Third Grade: Day 72

Today is Isabel’s first day back at piano in 2 weeks and she’s rusty. She did better than I thought but she needs to get back to practice practice practice.

She’s got some new books (she got for Christmas) and her teacher Ms. G gave her a couple new books with new music.

Tuesday’s are always weird because we begin the day like normal and then we leave for several hours, only to return not in any mood to get back to school work. It’s tough.

The Bible verse for this week is…

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

Over the next 3 weeks she’ll be learning the first 3 verses of John 1.

Today we finished another book, this one was a science book, about the seas and oceans of the world. It was a good book and I think Isabel enjoyed it. Than again anything with animals, lately, she’s totally into.

Her dolphin report is moving along.

We went to the library today and got 4 books on the subject. All are going to be great references for information for her besides the information we got off the internet last week. Tomorrow she needs to write up a rough outline. Then Thursday or Friday she will need to write up her rough draft and then the next day write up her report.

She’s working on math here and I was playing with the camera.

We also started a new book today.

We’ve only just begun and it’s a small book so we’ll be finished by Friday.

Our Native American prayer focus this week is the Iroquois tribe.

Third Grade: Day 68

We started late in the day this morning, it was almost 11:00 a.m. by the time I finally sat down to begin our studies. I was tempted to just take the day off but after prompting from Isabel that we needed to start the day with our Bible lesson. Her prompt got me going for the day!

Our Bible lesson for the day was a good one and can be found in Deuteronomy 30:11-20 and
Acts 2:1-36.

In History and Geography, we have been studying the early American History. We are getting closer to the 13 colonies Independence from Great Britain. We have just finished going through the French and Indian War.

Today was poetry and we learned about Free Verse poems. Our favorite Free Verse poems come from S. Silverstein. We enjoyed reading several of his and others that we found across the internet.

With today being the last day of 2014, for fun, I had Isabel write up a “time capsule” that I borrowed from another website.

Time Capsule worksheet.

With starting so late in the day, we were still able to get everything completed for the day and she was able to work on her tide pool field journal. When she gets the whole thing completed I will try to remember to take some photos.

Third Grade: Day 67

The Bible verse for this week…

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7

Just before our Christmas break, Isabel was given the assignment to write a report about an animal of her choosing.

She picked the dolphin.

My Project 8-001_edited-2

Yesterday, we did some internet research about them. She found out the food they eat, how big they get, how long they live, where they live and some other information about these mammals.

Over the next few days she needs to gather more information and later in the week she needs to write up a a rough outline. Next week she needs to have enough information to write up a rough draft and then write up her report.

If you remember she had to do a similar report last year on a northwest mammal. She picked the porcupine.

One of Isabel’s science books has internet links so that we can further learning and knowledge. Today our links lead us to some fascinating finds.

We watched videos of:

  • barnacles
  • crabs
  • anemones
  • mussels
  • sea snails
  • sea urchins
  • octopus
  • chiton
  • brittle stars

Great stuff and we both learned something.

The dangerous weather situations, we talked about were; hurricanes, typhoons, waterspouts, and tsunami’s.

We talked at great length about tsunami’s and the 2004 Asia Tsunami that happened on December 26th. We watched home videos (no sound) from those that survived the 2004 tsunami.

Third Grade: Day 66

We have gotten right back to work after our Christmas break last week. It was a great time to just relax and spend time together.

This week we are learning about transitions in Bible. In Acts chapters 1-3 we will learn about Jesus telling His followers the need to go out and get others to follow Him.

In Numbers and Deuteronomy we will be learning about the Israelites leadership passing from Moses to Joshua.

The Bible verse for this week…

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7

This week we are continuing the story of…

Johnny Tremain” by E.Forbes, chapters 3 and 4.
Great book, dealing with pride and arrogance.

This week we are starting the book…

The Skippack School” by M.d. A.

In Science we are continuing our learning about the Seas and Oceans. Today we talked about currents, tides and coast lines.
