First Grade: Day 12

Thursday in class is called “Thankful Thursdays“.

Thankful Thursday is also P.E. with Mrs. S and computer lab with Mrs. T. For P.E., they used the scooters in the gym, having relay races. Isabel was put on a team with all boys and she said the boys were in a hurry and wanted her to hurry up when it was her turn.

Isabel didn’t mention anything else about her day, she did mention that someone had a bloody nose. She said that was weird because since school began, about every other day someone gets a bloody nose. I thought that was a little weird too.

Front: “I” has 2 sounds.

Back: “O” has 3 sounds.
I love the visual that is given for each sound of the letter!

Front: complete the sentences.

Back: phonics work.

Her math homework for today she did in class before she got home. So we skipped doing homework today after school and just had some fun!

First Grade: Day 11

Today is Wonderful Wednesday and it’s also the first field trip of the year!

Isabel’s class got to go on the “Howdy Tour” at the fair. It sounds like she had a lot of fun!

The highlight of her day was the Rain-forest Exhibit, which is new to the fair this year. The kids entered the building by sliding down a slide (the adults had to go through the door)! When she slide down the slide she thought she was going to end up in a pool of water with the alligator, so she went down slow. Inside the Rain-forest she saw an alligator, frogs, turtles, parrots and a snake. There were trees too and she got to walk over a bridge, sit on giant mushrooms and explore the whole place on her own! “Momma, we didn’t have to stay in a line, we could walk around on our own, in our own groups.” She said.

The excitement of the Rain-forest made up for not being able to pet any of the animals this year. She did get to see piglets (and hear it squeal), chicks, goats, sheep, chickens, geese, ducks, a turkey, rabbits (albino), horses, a camel, a zebra, and a zebra-donkey. However they didn’t get to see any cows, again this year, the cows don’t arrive until the end of the fair, due to the smell.

With the fair tour taking up so much of their time today, they didn’t get very much work done. She didn’t take about her day in class. Which was totally fine, I enjoyed hearing her talk about the fair tour.

Front: sentence building.

Back: more sentence building.

First Grade: Day 10

Today is Terrific Tuesday which means it’s Chapel and library day!

Isabel has been looking forward to returning back to the library after last week. She picked out another B.B. book.

This one is about cubs forgetting their manners when parents aren’t around.
She did a great job reading it and only needed help with 2 words.

When I asked her about Chapel today she didn’t really mention anything (I’ll get the info later in the week). She said the 5th grade teacher Mrs. D spoke. Mrs. D spoke about, “just saying NO” to things that distract us from our relationship with God (to much t.v. or video games, etc.) and instead choose to live in godly self-controlled, giving, kind and joyful attitude. Sounds like it was a great message.

Her Chapel dress today is from her cousin Abni.
She is finally able to wear it and it looks very nice. Thank you Abni!

She also mentioned that one of the girls in class got sick and threw up. She was sent home for the rest of the day. The class prayed for her to get better and Isabel hopes she feels better for the field trip tomorrow.

Still talking about sin separating us us from God.
Great lesson to go along with her new library book!

Front: “A” has 3 sounds.

Back: “E” has 2 sounds.

First Grade: Day 9

Monday in class is called “Marvelous Monday” and today was Marvelous for Isabel!

Marvelous Mondays are also All-School Opening.

All-School Opening is an assembly held each Monday for the entire school. The Bible verse for the week is recited together, the school rule for the week is reviewed and discussed, new needed announcements are made as well. Special student awards (called Shining R’s) and recognition takes place at this time as well. The Shining R’s awards are given (usually the teacher) to anyone who show’s Respect, Relationship, or Responsibility to fellow classmates in class or on campus. Last week Isabel got an “R” almost every day, she then placed those “R’s” in a larger container for All-School Open on Monday. Each Monday, Principle Mrs. B draws names from the container and those people win a Shining R! Isabel’s name was drawn for the first time today! After All-School Open, she was able to take her Shining R award to the office to get a special prize from the prize box.

Hurray for Isabel for showing Respect, Relationship, and/or Responsibility to others! Keep it up Kiddo, not just to get a prize in the office but to shine your light for Jesus! So proud of her! (Last year she wasn’t able to participate because she was only 1/2 day, so she has been really excited that she has gotten some and that she actually won a prize!)

She chose an eraser for her prize.
She said the box was filled with bracelets, pencils, and even candy!

Front: phonics work with the letter “Y”.
I love this visual of  how many sounds a “Y” can make!

Back: phonics work with the letter “Y”.
There are 4 sounds a “Y” makes! Awesome.

Front: rhyming words!
I loved doing this when I was in school.

Back: more rhyming words.

Gino and I were surprised when just before school started Isabel said she didn’t know how to write her numbers anymore. So all this practice is great to see!

Word practice.
I love her writing!

Social Studies work on what is a community.

What is a community?
What is a citizen? Who is a citizen?
What is a rule?
What does a vote mean? Who votes?
What is a law?

When asked all the questions Isabel was able to give an answer for each!
This is awesome!

First Grade: Day 8

Fridays are a big day at school with “something” usually going on. This Friday is 1/2 day Fair Day. The kids are given a free ticket to the fair being held in town and they get a half day of school to attend. Personally, I think it’s a bit silly to get out a 1/2 day of school to attend a fair that runs for 3 weeks straight. At some point in time during those three weeks a family can attend the fair… it’s called WEEKENDS! Anyway…

Friday in class is called “Fantastic Fridays“.

Besides the special “something” that is going on at the school on Fantastic Fridays, they also attend music class with Mr. G, just like on Wednesdays.

Leaving the Garden of Eden because Adam and Eve disobeyed God.

A little quiz about the story of Adam and Eve.

Her math work from class today.
On the back is her homework which she will hand in on Monday and will get returned to her on Friday.

Fridays are also “Friday Folder” days. This Friday Folder Teacher Mrs. B sends home with all the graded work from the past week in. However this week had last weeks work in it too because the week was so short. This folder is just packed with wonderful work and great surprises…

This little 5 page book is filled with drawings and short sentences from her first week in school. There is a self portrait, a picture of Teacher Mrs. B, a picture of her school, a picture of a friend in class, and a picture of her classroom. The last page is the best part of first grade is…”learning”. I love this!

Test 1.

These next 3 photos are from tests that she took during the week.
Teacher Mrs. B gave a letter and she had to write the letter down on her paper.

Test 2.

Test 3.

This 6 page worksheet was a great writing, counting and observation lessons.

An 8 page worksheet with numbers 1-6, counting and writing.

Reviewing color words and color shades.

Another color review page.

This test was given Friday of last week. Teacher Mrs. B read the questions aloud to the class and the class filled in the answer in the book.
The word recognition word/s that Isabel missed was could and would.
I think she did a fantastic job! Way to go!

First Grade: Day 7

Again, this morning I had to get to work so Isabel and Gino were on there own for the day until I got home.

Thursday in class is called “Thankful Thursdays“.

Thankful Thursday is also P.E. with Mrs. S and computer lab with Mrs. T. This week in P.E. they played dodge ball in the gym and in computer lab they did AR (accelerated reader) testing.

4 more “shoe box” books were given out.

Front: phonics work with letters “Y”, “Z”, and “Q”.

Back: phonics work with letters “V” and “J” below
“I have a little dog.” and “I have a little ball.”

Character counts! – showing respect to others around you.

This ribbon the class got to cut out on their own and then they got to finish the sentence about showing respect.
Fantastic job!

First Grade: Day 6

This morning I had to get to work so Isabel and Gino were on there own for the day until I got home around 4.

Wednesday in class is called “Wonderful Wednesdays“.

Wonderful Wednesdays is also music class with the school music teacher Mr. G.

More “shoe box” books.

Front: phonics work with letters “B” and “K” and below
“Come to the mall” and “I look for the grapes.” – I am enjoying the pictures!

Back: phonic work with letters “W” and “X” and below
“See me read the Bible” and “I have one dog.”

“God says all wrong doing is sin.” – Love the coloring!

They have been talking about Adam and Eve still (more from last week) and focusing more on the sin. The focus this week has been “God’s perfect world is spoiled by sin” from Genesis 3: 1-6:8.

Her math work she does part in class and then brings the back page home for homework each day and then she returns it the following day. I tend to forget to get a picture of it before it heads back to class.

She has really been enjoying class and getting to know the kids in her class and the other first grade class (a lot of whom is already knows from Preschool and Kindergarten). She seems to really like her teacher Mrs. B as well. After school, she is very excited to tell us about her day and what she does at each of her 3 recesses (the highlight of her day) and who she plays with!

Next Wednesday (one week from today) will be her first field trip, I will not be able to go with her this time, so I hope that she’s o.k. going by herself for the very first time.
We’ll see…

First Grade: Day 5

Today was Tuesday and that means Chapel at school. This weeks Chapel speaker was our own school Principal Mrs. B.

Principal Mrs. B taught on the school’s Spiritual theme this year, which is IMPACT: Heart, Soul, Mind, and Strength.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Mark 12:30

Principal Mrs. B used the illustration of a throne inside a heart. When we are still young, we all sit on that throne in our heart but as we grow, we may share the seat or place “things” on that seat. However to “love the Lord your God with all your heart“, we actually have to get off our throne and keep other “things” off and let God sit there.

Tuesdays also mean a “new” event takes place too… she gets to go to the library at school. Each and every Tuesday afternoon she gets to go and pick out a book,  after she returns the previous weeks book. She is super excited about this!

This week she picked out “The Berenstain Bears and the Blame Game”. We love these books and the life lessons they teach in each and everyone. I’ll have her read it several times before she returns it on Tuesday.

4 more early reader booklets or “shoe box” books.

She took a letter test today. Teacher Mrs. B said a letter out loud to the class and the class had to listen to the sound and then write it on their paper.

For the color words test, Teacher Mrs. B writes the words on the board and the class has to write the word on their paper. Afterward she talks about a item for them to draw on their paper as well.

Front: Phonics practice with the letter’s “L” and “H” and below
“I see the chalk” and “Look at the Bible” drawings.

Back: Phonics practice with letter “G” and “F”  and below
“What do you have? A dog” and “Do you like naps? No, I like to read.”

Geography lesson and learning the terms of the land/sea.

Math work was letter writing. A bit in a rush here but she still did a great job.
On the back of her math sheet is her homework for the day. She completes it at home each afternoon before doing anything else. After it is completed she places it in her envelope to hand back in to Teacher Mrs. B. Teacher Mrs. B then grades the work and returns it along with all the weeks turned in work on Fridays.

Isabel did my hair this afternoon and she took a picture for me so that I could see it too. Great job on my hair and taking the picture.
