First Grade: Day 48 – Half Day

Today is Terrific Tuesday which means it’s Chapel and library day (normally)! Since today is a half day, library has been cancelled for today.

This week is Parent-Teacher Conference and the book fair is going all week long too. This Thursday is also a special hat day, the kids can wear a hat all day in honor of one of our first grade students (I’ll explain later).

Today however is a special Grandparents Chapel.

Welcome to all the Grandparents.
The sanctuary was filled with many grandparents today!

Since I am off work I get the honor of attending in place of our Grandparents. The program began at 10:30 and went for over an hour. All classes and even a few of the preschool classes got up to sing to all the grandparents in attendance. It was great!

Program back.

First graders singing their song for grandparents.

Pastor Carpenter (from the church) gave a great message about being a “cheerleader” for the grand kids. To enjoy a grandchild’s successes without the constraints that come when you are also responsible for the child’s behavior. Just cheer them on! Set a strong Christ-centered foundation for parents and grand-kids to follow in. The example he gave was of Timothy.

Fantastic message even for me, as I’m laying my “foundation” for my future grand kids!

My Parent-Teacher Conference was short and sweet. Isabel is doing fantastic in all areas. Her report card shows all “Excellent Progress” or “+”. She won’t receive a “grade” report card until next year. She needs to work a bit on her neatness and completing her work on time, otherwise she’s going great!

Below is a copy of Isabel’s MAP testing results. They do this testing twice in the school year to see where the children are academically. This was the first test for this school year…

Isabel is the top dark blue line!!
The school district average is the middle orange line.
The national average is the bottom light blue line.

First Grade: Day 46

Today is Wonderful Wednesday and music class with Mr. G.

Not much was said about class today and I didn’t ask much about it either since I worked a full day today and I was tired.

Today for some of their math work, they got to weigh some things. Each item that they weighed was balanced in weight with pennies.
Isabel really enjoyed doing this.

Put the best word that fits each sentence.

Front: “ew” as in Andrew and Matthew.

Back: “ui” as in fruit and juice.

First Grade: Day 45

Today is Terrific Tuesday which means it’s Chapel (normally) and library day!

Since I wasn’t working today, I took a few moments to walk around the classroom with Isabel and a few of her classmates to see the different bulletin boards…

Isabel had an “R” on her desk this morning when she arrived!

Her scarecrow.
The class worked on these the other day. So great to see the individuality of each one!

Also took a picture of the “crow about board”.
Isabel and several others and papers on this board!

Chapel this week is going to be held on Thursday because we are having a special Veteran’s Day Chapel this week. So no Chapel today.

Since Chapel is later in the week. Today they had music with Mr. G to practice those Christmas songs for the program. Mr. G was excited today, he told them that he would begin to teach them the motions to the songs soon. Isabel was really excited about that!

Library today will be the last one for 2 weeks; since next week is Parent-Teacher Conferences, they won’t have library next week. This week, Isabel was allowed to bring home a more difficult book to read. She told Librarian Mrs. R that she could read it and proved it by sounding out and reading several words from it. Librarian Mrs. R was impressed and told her to enjoy the book.

Today the class finished up there 2 day science experiment about “bubble bonds”. They explored atoms and how these tiny particles of matter hold things together or bond. The stronger the bond, the stronger the material!

Their observation experiment was with soap, petri dishes, and straws.
Isabel told me she loves science!

The scarecrow above replaced this fall picture that the class did several weeks ago.

First Grade: Day 44

It’s Marvelous Monday!

Marvelous Mondays are All-School Open.

I was at work this morning, so I was able to be at this All-School Open. Principle Mrs. B gave a short message from the book of Daniel and then went over a few reminders on how to act in the church Sanctuary.

We also got to hear the mixed-age preschool (I’ve worked with this group of kids) class give the Pledge of Allegiance on our local Christian Radio (that was so awesome! – Isabel’s class will be doing it next month!!!!).

We learned that the Book Fair begins next week with a visit from Ms. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus Series and Mr. Mouse from another book series.

Librarian Mrs. R with special guests to announce the Book Fair next week.

AR awards were handed out to several students including Isabel! She got her second award for the year!

She went from a “Ready Reader” to an “Independent Reader” in about a months time (she’s been so independent for a long time now).
Way to Go! to our little Bookworm!
(I so love that!!)

Isabel had music class with Mr. G. They worked together with all the other classes to get there parts and songs to flow better for their program next month.

She didn’t bring much much work home for the day but had a few pages of homework for the afternoon to return tomorrow…

Some math work.
She said she finished this up and decided to…

Flip her paper over and write out words in the dictionary.
She did this all own her own with no encouragement from Teacher Mrs. B. She said she had the dictionary on her desk because she couldn’t remember how to spell a word and decided to do this after she was finished with her math. Wow!!

The Bible verse for this week is:

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” Ephesians 2:10a

First Grade: Day 43

It’s Fantastic Friday!

Today was music class with Mr. G. They are practicing really hard on getting those Christmas songs memorized for the Christmas program next month!

She also told me they did a art project today. They made scarecrows and they are hanging in the classroom. I told her she’d have to show me on Monday!

Today they had all their recesses outside! The kids loving being able to go outside and get some fresh air. They dislike being in the gym and having to play board games or do school work. So glad that the rain held off until after school to start raining again.

Isabel got another 100% award for her memory verse.
I didn’t think she would make it through since she kept getting stuck on the chapter and number part. Great job!

Front: choose the best sentence that goes with the picture.

Back: read the story and then answer the questions.

Front: love this coloring picture that she did!

Back: fall poem.

~Fall~
Fall is a season of the year.
Leaves change color and fall from the trees.
The weather gets cooler and the days get shorter.
Farmers harvest crops and animals prepare for winter.

AR testing results for the month of October.

She has done a fantastic job on her reading, she has read 44,289 words since June and is almost at a 3rd grade level (I believe it to be higher).

As a whole, the school has read 8,727,258 words!
They are slowly making it to their school wide goal of 50,000,000 words!!
That is so AWESOME!
