School News: Fair School

Today Isabel’s class went to “Our Towns” Fair School. Despite the rain coming down there was a large turn out and Isabel enjoyed it. Mrs. W was there to greet us and then she turned the class over to a guide, who took us on tour at the Fair School. Enjoy!

The first barn, our guide explained where food in our state is grown, what kinds of foods are grown, and then let the kids explore the room with help from the parents.

Isabel and I started with a few books and then moved onto vegetable magnets.
We stopped to work on this farm puzzle too.

We also stopped at the vegetable table and got to identify different vegetable’s that grow in our area. Here Isabel is holding an onion. Isabel and I didn’t get to continue around the room here because we needed to move on to the next barn.

In the next barn we learned how a farm takes wheat from a seed, plants it, harvests it, mills it, sifts it, kneads it, and then makes it into something good to eat!

Isabel is working on identifying the different parts of a shaft of wheat from the roots to the head. She did this on her own and did it correctly! She was paying attention!

Getting some seed kernels to put in the miller or grinder.

Giving that grinder a crank and milling the wheat.

After we grind the wheat we would sift it.

After sifting it, we would knead it into a dough and then…

We could make pasta like this or like…

… this! Or we could make bread or cereal or any other yummy things to eat with wheat.

After this we headed over to the last barn which is the petting barn. Where we saw chickens that lay white eggs, chickens that lay brown eggs, a HUGE male turkey (that scared Isabel when it gobbled!), runner ducks, ducklings, goats, alpacas, sheep and lambs, and bunnies (even kits too!).

This is the largest bunny that they have… and I forget the name of it.

This is an Angora bunny. So fluffy!

Petting alpaca’s… I think Isabel was trying to feed it but the lady told her not to put her hands by it’s face because they like to jump and kick.

Pygmy goat. Does she look nervous to you, too?

Afterward we washed our hands, thanked our “teacher-guide” for the guided tour, and told Mrs. W good-bye.

We learned a lot and had fun at the Fair Farm!
