Second Grade: Day 7

Today is Thursday and it is P.E. with Mrs. S. For P.E. they played “don’t steal from the cookie jar” and “dead ants“. Both of them were running games and similar to tag.

Tonight is parent orientation night, so I will be working as a teacher and being the parent while Gino stays home with Isabel. Looking forward to seeing a project that Isabel says she’s been working on since last week!

She didn’t get her booklet finished, since it wasn’t required work like her school work.

Second Grade: Day 6

Today is Wednesday and it’s Chapel and library day.

They have changed Chapel day from Tuesday to Wednesday this year, so it’s going to take some getting used to.

Today’s Chapel was given by Pastor Jason H. He shared with the students about the importance of our words. What words you put into your mind will be words that come out of your mouth! We need to remember to use words that support and encourage those around us and not use words to put down someone or use filthy or dirty words. Isabel explained his visual message very well and she seemed to understand the meaning of his lesson.

Teacher Mrs. A grades and returns the classwork and homework rather quickly. Each Friday she sends home a review sheet for classwork and homework, if anything from the work is missing she will let you know on this review sheet. Sounds like a great way to make sure that all work is accounted for.

Second Grade: Day 5

Today is Tuesday and that means it’s music class with Mr. G. During music class, they talked about “dynamics“. Dynamics in music means how loud or soft something is. They played a game with dynamics.

The first week or so, Teacher Mrs. A will be reviewing things that should have been learned in first grade. She will also be assessing reading and place the class according to skill level.

Second Grade: Day 4

Today is the first Monday of the school year and it’s All-School Open and music class.

Today’s A.S.O. was about school rules (several new ones this year) and what is expected from the students as the year progresses.

This week Isabel will be the pledge leader in class. She will have an opportunity to stand up and lead the whole class each morning with the pledges. Each week a new student will be chosen alphabetically.

Music class with Mr. G was short. Isabel said, Mr G showed them around his new room and just explained different things in the room.

This week’s Bible verse is…

“For He who promised is faithful.” – Hebrews 10:23b

Monday’s are Isabel’s show and tell (S.a.T.) days, along with 3 other classmates. Tuesday through Friday are her fellow classmates S.a.T. days.

The theme for this weeks S.a.T. was to share something that you learned over the summer. Isabel was the only person from her Monday group that brought something to share.

Isabel shared her learning experience from Crater Lake National Park and getting her Junior Ranger Patch and Badge. She took photos, the newspaper guide, and her Junior Ranger Book.

The spelling words for this week are…

no spelling words for this week.

Below is her classwork that was finished in class today. For homework she had 20 minutes of reading and math pages to do.

Second Grade: Day 3 – Spirit Friday

Today is Spirit Friday – Surfer USA.

The kids could wear Bermuda shorts/capris along with their surf attire. Not many kids wore surf attire but most wore shorts, which was a bummer because who wants to go to the beach when it’s rainy and cold?
That’s how the day started and continued throughout most of the day. It cleared up for about an hour and then started raining again just when I was picking her up for the day.

She said that 2 of the recesses were in the gym. The first recess was a quite one with the kids reading books, which she said she enjoyed sitting down by herself and reading (that’s my kiddo!). For lunch recess however, she didn’t mention what they did in the gym. Lunch recess is the longest of the 3 and was probably organized into small groups playing games.

The class worked more on their “about me” booklet. Isabel said she got her self portrait finished. She said there is more to do in the book which they will finish next week.

Today she brought home her first class newsletter/announcements…

  • Fall assessment testing will take place over the coming week. Looking forward to hearing about that and see how she’s doing.
  • An at home reading chart was attached. Isabel should be reading 20 minutes, 3 nights a week. She does that and so much much more! She’s a reader! The calender will be handed in at the end of month.
  • The Bible verse for the coming week is: “For He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23b
  • Show and tell will begin next week. Isabel’s share days are on Mondays. This coming week, she has to share something that she has LEARNED this summer. I’ll let you know what she chooses on Monday!

Getting to know those around you in class.
Isabel said, Teacher Mrs. A, let the kids walk around and ask their peers questions.
I love this activity!

Remembered her #1 alphabet order.

Beautiful handwriting.

Second Grade: Day 2

Today was the second day of class. The class is still working on learning the new rules and working on getting into a groove for the year ahead.

She had a great day! She was excited to go and came home in a great mood too.

The class has been working on a “all about me” booklet since yesterday. She hasn’t mentioned what it’s about but she’s working on getting it finished.

She turned in her ticket for the drawing, from yesterday. She didn’t win in the drawing but that’s O.K.

She did mention she doesn’t like having recess with the older kids. Today, she got hit in the head (again) with a flying ball. Poor kiddo. Gotta watch where your going and keep an eye on what’s going on around you.
This year the school combined all the elementary, so kindergarten through 6th grade are all out on the field and playground together for recesses. I guess they have done this in the past but this is our first year experiencing it, so it’ll take some getting used to.

2013-09-06 002_edited-1

First school work for the year.
Her penmanship is fantastic!

2013-09-06 004_edited-1Again nice work.

If you are wondering what the marks mean at the top of her paper…

Isabel #1 – is how she needs to write her name on her work each day. The #1 is her last name order in the alphabet and she just happens to be number 1! There are 23 alphabet orders in her class.
The number marks are her “grades” for each of the assignments. Great job!

Second Grade: Day 1

Today (I have the wrong date on the easel!)  is the first day of school in our area! While most of the country has been back to school for almost a month, we are just beginning!

Isabel has been going back and forth with how she feels about this first day of school. One day she’s excited and can’t wait for it to come and the next she doesn’t want it to come at all! I remember those days…

However this morning, she took off for her class without even a goodbye or backward glance! She’s growing up!

2013-09-04 002_edited-1

She helped me fill out her information board.

She loves the color purple.
She loves pizza.
She loves Lula (her little lambs she’s had since she was born!) and her new Blaster.

She does not like mushrooms or teriyaki!

2013-09-04 006_edited-1

Silly photo!

The school theme this year is: “SOAR on wings like eagles.” Isaiah 40:30,31
Her teacher is Mrs. A

Her best friend Ms. Mila, is not in her class this year, which gives her an opportunity to make new friends and there are a lot of new families at school this year!

2013-09-04 008_edited-1

After 2 years she doesn’t fit in the window anymore!
I had to get a picture anyway…

Now it’s off to her first day of school!

My Project 1-001 (10)_edited-1

After school she was excited to tell me about her day…

There are at least 3 new (new to our school) girls in her class and today she met one of them and her name is Miss H. Miss H sits behind Isabel in class. Isabel also sits right next to Miss Maliyah. Miss Maliyah has been in Isabel’s kindergarten and first grade classes.

Even though her best friend Miss Mila, it not in her class, she is able to play with her at recess. Today during recess they played tug-of-war with Miss Maddie and the new Miss H.

Isabel got to use her brand new crayons, pencils, and new eraser on her first day! She still has a snack time, lunch, and 3 recesses each day like in first grade.

Each day she can earn a “good behavior” sticker at the end of the day. If she gets 5 stickers in a row, she can get a prize from the “treasure chest“. The “treasure chest” is loaded with pencils, stickers, sports cards, and other little goodies.

Each Friday, Teacher Mrs. A, will draw a girl name and a boy name, the names drawn get to take home either “Bella Bear” or “Buddy Bear” with journal. The kids can write an adventure story over the weekend that includes “Bella” or “Buddy” in the story. Great way to get the kids into early writing!

Goodie Bag that was given to the students from Teacher Mrs. A.

Chocolate kiss: Jesus love you.
Cotton ball: using kind words with each other in class makes us warm and fuzzy.
Sticker: stick together and stick up for each other in class.
Eraser: everyone makes mistakes and we learn from them.
Bookmark: lots of great reading ahead.
Smarties: learning and growing this year will make us into “smarties”.
Superstar ticket: tell your parents about this goodie bag and all the items inside. Bring the ticket back to class with your name and parents name to put in the Superstar container.

2013-09-04 013_edited-1This is the paper that came with the goodie bag that helps explain the items in the bag.

Her diploma!
She got one from the school and one from Teacher Mrs. B.

She’s headed to second grade!!

My Project 1-001 (3)_edited-1

She’s done a lot of growing this year and continues to surprise us with her beautiful spirit. We pray that as she keeps heading down her path in life that she will draw close to Jesus and let him lead her down the path. As the theme verse for the school year states…

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” – Mark 12:30

In and through Him will she only find the answers to all her questions. She only needs to slow down and listen. Have a great summer!
