Second Grade: Day 59 – Half Day

Today is Wednesday, it’s Family Chapel and it’s a half day.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving!

WeAreThankful_2013-001_edited-1This year has been a year of thankfulness and my heart is overflowing with gratitude for all that I have learned and continue to learn. God is so good to us, when we follow were He leads us. Even though I make mistakes, He doesn’t leave me or abandon me. I get back up and continue on.
He’s awesome!

There was no classwork today. They had fun!

They did have Family Chapel, where they talked about thankfulness.

Thankfulness turkey’s, each feather is what she’s thankful for.

In the classroom, they had a Thanksgiving feast. They made placemat’s and enjoyed a buffet of  turkey, veggies, cheese, fruit cups, cookies and juice boxes. They also made hat’s. Half the class was Native American’s and the other half was Pilgrim’s. Isabel was a Native American.

2013-11-29 001_edited-1The office staff handed this cute snack sack out to all the kids.
I love how they tied in the snack with a Bible verse!

Bugles: shaped like the cornucopia,
a symbol of our abundance. Jude 1:2

Pretzels: arms folded in prayer,
a freedom sought by those who founded our country. Psalm 119:45

Candy Corn:
the sacrifice of the Pilgrim’s first winter, food was so scarce they survived on just a few kernels of corn a day!

Seeds: promise of future harvest,
only obtained was we plant and nourish with diligence and faith. Lam. 3:22-26

M&M’s: memories of those who came before,
lead us to a blessed future and friends that sweeten our lives. 1 Cor. 13:13

Isabel was drawn for Bella Bear!

Each Friday, Teacher Mrs. A,draws two names for the class bear’s. There is one of the boys and one for girls. The students whose name’s are drawn gets to take Bella or Buddy bear home for the weekend. During the weekend, the students can take the bear on adventures and then write a story in the bear’s diary about their time together.

Isabel was 2nd to the last person before the names are added to the draw and the rotation begins again. The boys are already into their second rotation.

What adventures await Bella at our house?
Wait and see…

Second Grade: Day 58

WeAreThankful_2013-001_edited-1

It’s going to be a short school week with only 2 normal days and 1 half day with a Thanksgiving celebration on Wednesday.

The Bible lesson on the Ten Commandments has been postponed until after the holiday.

The Bible verse for this week is…

“It is good to praise the Lord and make music to Your name, O Most High, to proclaim Your love in the morning and Your faithfulness at night.”
– Psalm 92:1-2

There is no S.a.T. (show and tell) and spelling words this week.

This is last week’s spelling test. You will notice that the very first word is incorrect. When I took the paper back to Teacher Mrs. A, she said she had to give Isabel the grade she got because she (the Teacher) missed it when grading her paper. I told her I didn’t feel right because it’s clearly wrong, she said it’s O.K. she didn’t catch it. I still feel awkward about it but I can’t argue with the teacher.

Second Grade: Day 55

Today is Thursday, it’s P.E. and Isabel’s first piano lesson!

My Project 3-001_edited-1Before class, she told me, she had been nervous about going to her lesson. Her Teacher Ms. G was so nice, she made all the nervousness go away. She’s already looking forward to next weeks class.

After coming home and finishing her school homework, she sat down at the piano and practiced for almost half an hour before dinner. After dinner she went over her lesson with Daddy, who gave her a few tips and pointers on how to do the lessons correctly.

Piano Teacher Ms. G would like her practice at least 15-20 minutes a day in the beginning and work up to 30 minutes. Classes will be 30 minutes after school each Thursday, unless there is an alternate day due to half day or no school. Next week’s class will be on Tuesday, since Thanksgiving is on Thursday and there is no school.

Second Grade: Day 54

Today is Wednesday, Honor’s Chapel, parent/student lunch and library.

Honor’s Chapel is a special Chapel where the school honors the kids for their academic achievements and other areas from last quarter.

For Honor’s Chapel, Isabel wore her new dress from Grandpa!

2013-11-20 003_edited-1

She loves this dress because it’s long in the back.

The assembly…

Isabel was awarded for perfect attendance and academic achievement (honor roll).

Second Grade: Day 52

Today is Monday and it’s a normal full week of school!

Today is music class with Mr. G. Isabel didn’t fill me in about what they did today.

This week’s Bible verse is…

“You shall have no other gods before me.”
“You shall not make for yourself an idol.”
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.”
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.”

For the next 2 weeks the class will be going over rules; rules at home, rules at school, and rules in the community. They will be using the Ten Commandments to liken to the rules that are established at home. Just like the Ten Commandments, or God’s rules, provide safety and efficiency of an entire nation. Rules in the home provide safety and efficiency in the home. Sounds like a great lesson!

The Bible verse ties in with the Bible lesson for the week which is the 10 commandments.

S.a.T. (show and tell) for the week is to share something you are thankful for. However, we didn’t discuss it before school, so hopefully she shared something she’s thankful for (she didn’t – no one did).

The spelling words for this week are…

bar
jar
star
farm
harm
charm
dark
remark
sparkle
alarm
fourteen
source
between
enough
idea
announced: made something known to many people
arrived: came to a place
glum: sad, gloomy
members: those who belong to a group
rebuild: make something again

Language arts this week is proper nouns and “Lemonade for Sale“.

Social studies this week is begin the lesson on Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.

Classwork…

Last week’s S.a.T. (show and tell) was about Grandparents. Isabel had to fill out this small booklet about them. She had to call them on the phone and ask them questions about when they were kids. She really enjoyed talking to them on the phone (always does) and hearing their answers about when they were her age.

The booklet below is from a project (early book report?!) they did over several weeks about a book they read together in class. Teacher Mrs. A had them complete the booklet at their own pace, there was no time limit. They were told to draw pictures and write a title for each page about the book.

Isabel did a fantastic job on her booklet but needs to keep up the enthusiasm and momentum to the end of the project. As you can see by the end of her project, she isn’t putting as much effort into it as Teacher Mrs. A had hoped she had at the beginning. Teacher Mrs. A and I had talked about this booklet during parent/teacher conferences last week.
