Kindergarten: Day 41

This morning when we arrived at class Isabel handed Lliam the dinosaur picture that she had drawn for him yesterday after school. This how it went…

(as Lliam is walking away from Isabel) Isabel: Lliam this is for you.
(Lliam turns around and grabs the paper) Lliam: IS THIS A DINOSAUR!!!!! (yelling)
(Isabel steps back) Isabel: Yes.
Lliam: Thank you!
I say to Lliam: She drew it just for you.
Lliam to his dad: Look at this dinosaur my best friend gave me!
Lliam’s dad: That’s a great looking dinosaur. Did you tell her thank you?
Lliam: Thank you!

The whole exchange was so cute! I think both the kids were just tickled pink! Lliam for the dinosaur picture and Isabel for the kindness from her new friend in Lliam.

After school Isabel didn’t tell me anything about her day.

The opening activity was a maze.

So glad for this review of numbers. Isabel a times still writes her numbers backward.

Back: evidence of some of her backward numbers.

Kindergarten: Day 40

This morning was another cold one with frost on the windshield lucky I didn’t need to scrap it this morning.

I remembered to get the photo of the tooth chart this morning! I also got a picture of the new bulletin board along the back wall.

The kids get to write their own name on the tooth. Lincoln and Isabel are the only ones so far to loose a tooth for October. However I did hear Mrs. Boettcher ask someone this morning if their tooth had fallen out yet!

The bulletin board along the back is decorated with pumpkins (the month before it was apples – should have gotten a picture). Isabel’s pumpkin is the bottom left corner.

When Isabel got out of class today all she could talk about was Lliam and how nice he had been to Isabel all day. I thought that was great, since he sits beside her and tends to be rough with her. She told me on the way home that Lliam and been talking about “zombies” (seriously, who lets their 5 yr. old watch something with zombies?!?!). Isabel said she didn’t know what zombies were but Lliam told her that they were dinosaurs!..I’ll stick with that for now!

When we got home she was still talking about Lliam and before lunch she sat down to draw him a dinosaur picture for him.

Opening activity this morning was first name practice. She did a great job!

Phonics practice with the letter “Nn“.

Back: more phonics practice with “Nn“.

Tt” and “Aa” phonics work.

Back: word blending “Aa” – “Tt”.

This apple was from the bulletin board last month.
Should have gotten a picture of the whole board.

Pumpkin Carving

This afternoon we carved our pumpkins that we got over the weekend at the pumpkin patch. Enjoy!

We set up my craft table and laid out an old tablecloth and then got to work.

Gino cut the tops off for us and then we let Isabel clean out her pumpkin.
She’s so excited!!

Scooping out the insides.

She did a great job getting all the seeds and pulp out before Gino and I went in with our ice cream spade to clean up any of the harder stuff she couldn’t get with her hands.

She’s so enjoying this!

We had her draw on paper what she wanted, then we let her draw on the pumpkin with a dry erase marker. It worked out great for fixing mistakes that happened along the way.

While Gino carved Isabel’s pumpkin, I cleaned out the other 2 pumpkins.

Mommy’s pumpkin with a jolly face!

Gino didn’t get his pumpkin carved out since it was getting late and his hand was cramping up. So hopefully he’ll work on it and we can get it outside with the other ones!

The finally resting spot for our pumpkins is the back patio. We put in some votive candles and watched them through the sliding glass door while we ate dinner.

Kindergarten: Day 39

Today is day 40 of our school year, only 60 more days until the 100th day! Looking forward to that and I know the class is too.

I had to actually scrap the windows this morning before we headed off to school. It was very cold out! While I was scrapping, Isabel was singing loudly in the car, “This is the Day”. She sang it all the way to school!

This is the day. This is the day. That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made. I will rejoice. I will rejoice and be glad in it and be glad in it. This is the day that the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it. This is the day. This is the day that the Lord has made.

When we arrived at class Mrs. Boettcher showed me the large tooth with Isabel’s name written on it. I have to remember to take the camera before class and get a picture!

Today was a busy day with Chapel included. Isabel said Chapel was good. She said Mrs. McCarty (the other kindergarten teacher) brought in a craved pumpkin and it wasn’t scary. It had a smile carved into it.

I later learned what the lesson was about. The lesson Mrs. Mccarty gave was about the “Pumpkin Patch Parable” by Liz Curtis Higgs (love this book!). God watches as our faith grows in Him. He washes us clean, scoops out our fears, doubts, and sin. He “carves” a beautiful smile and puts His light inside us. We are part of God’s garden and he is the master gardener tending to us and helping us to be the best we can be.
Luke 8:11 “The seed is the Word of God.”

The opening activity was a maze in a nest.
I loved how Isabel colored this, she did such a great job!
I love the purple eyes of the birds too.

More “Nn” work with nests.

Back: more “Nn” work. Along the edge is the tower of Babel.

Their math work for today. They didn’t get to finish this because it was toward the end of class and one of the mom’s brought cupcakes for her daughter’s birthday today!

Kindergarten: Day 38

Isabel was excited to get to class this morning and tell Mrs. Boettcher all about her weekend. After arriving at school she showed everyone the space in her mouth where she lost her tooth. What a silly girl!

The opening activity was capital “Aa” practice. I had noticed on the board that Mrs. Boettcher had written how to write it correctly. Keeping the top at a point and not rounding it. Isabel did a great job on her paper except for one. Great job!

(Bad bleed through!) Back: She wrote about losing her tooth. Haha! Love it!

Today the 5th grade class had a harvest party with games, crafts, and treats in the gym. The older kids helped the younger kids play games and do crafts. Isabel said she played a bean-bag game and did a race with a pumpkin on a spoon (her pumpkin fell off once she said). She also got to decorate a cookie (w/help) and made a fall craft with Popsicle sticks. From the sounds of it, it seems like she had a really fun time at the party. She even got to bring home a decorated paper bag with candy inside. However the decorated cookies the class got to eat for their snack during snack time! I only got to see the evidence on her face!

One of the other girls in class got sick at her desk. All the other kids had to leave the table and sit elsewhere. Isabel said that the girl wasn’t feeling well and she was upset after she got sick. Her mom and Grandmother came to get her to take her home.

Isabel got to write her name on “The Tooth”. Which is a large tooth-shaped paper(s) that the class uses to record who loses teeth each month. Isabel got to put her name on the paper today! She was so excited and showed me paper on the bulletin board after we got into the classroom. I will have to get a picture of that!

Pumpkin Patch Part 2

After paying, we stop at the maze entrance to get instructions and then step into the maze…

Our map. Very cute and not scary! So glad for this.

Our map of the maze.

The blue lines are paths. We were told to find 6 mailboxes with hole punches. We had to match the hole punch with the symbol along the edge. Get the 6 punches and you get a secret word. Easy enough!

Before heading into the corn.

Heading down the path in the corn.

We ended up on a raised platform at one point and got to see the maze at a higher elevation. It was huge! There was another raised platform along the back of the maze but we never saw it again. There was also what looked to be a pyramid, never got to see that up close either! We had to have been in here an hour.

We found our first mailbox, with the pharaohs.

Isabel didn’t like this pharaoh but she at least stood by it for a picture.

Our first punch was a “staff”.

Onto the next one!… we never did find other mailbox. We ended up outside of the maze at one point and even got to see a large coiled burlap snake in a huge “wicker” basket. That was cool to see but no other mailboxes. I got so turned around after walking through one of many dark tunnels. Have to give the farm credit though, they have a great corn maze and the pumpkins are a fantastic price too!

Our dirty pumpkins need a bath!

Getting a good scrubbing.

Isabel with her pumpkin. I think she likes it.

Our pumpkins. We’ll carve them later in the week.

Pumpkin Patch Part 1

This morning after church we headed down to the valley and into a pumpkin patch. We didn’t realize how popular the place would be on a Sunday. However it didn’t seem at all busy as we looked around. The smells were wonderful, mixed with roasted corn, caramel apples, dirt, and crisp air. We took our time looking around at first and then headed into the corn maze to get lost! Enjoy!

We were lucky enough to get parking right along the driveway of the farm. We only had to walk through the gate and back to the entrance.

We headed under the covered area first to see all the different gourds and squash. So many varieties!

Chilacayote squash or fig-leaf gourd.

Heirloom French squash. Very knobby looking.

Cinderella pumpkins.

Sweet dumpling squash.

Didn’t see the name for this squash. Very different then the ones above.

Pink banana squash.

Knucklehead pumpkins.

We visit the pumpkin house and get a quick photo. Before moving on to the pumpkin patch. I should have had Gino take a picture of Isabel and I… oh well.

Heading out into the pumpkin patch, where giant spiders are waiting to greet us. The spiders were made from hay bales and PVC pipe.

Since this was such a big trip, I’ll break it up into 2 postings. We headed over to the tractor trike races and the rope maze. Neither one of these appealed to Isabel but she did want to go through the HUGE corn maze. So we headed over and got in line.
