Third Grade: Day 125

It’s Friday! Looking forward to the weekend and a break from the books (and MATH – I’m not the greatest at math but I’ve been proud of myself and my ability to teach Isabel what she needs to know this week). I’m also so proud of Isabel and all her hard work from the week.

We’ll take a break from the math and just go over simpler concepts and review.

We had a great week and got all our work finished and were able to read further in our Friday book “The CandyMakers”!

2015-02-26 008_edited-1

Both of us enjoy this book and it’s twists and suspense.
We are both full of theories how it’s going to end and we look forward each week to reading it!

Again beautiful work!
The passage is from Psalm 57:7-11

Five-minute frenzy:

2015-03-20 004_edited-1

I haven’t even gotten around to grade it yet!

I got some mail! Yesterday, Isabel had an assignment to write a thank-you note to someone. She wrote one to me.

2015-03-20 005_edited-1

Even though she has done these before, it’s great practice for her.

Most people don’t write such personal and heart felt correspondence anymore. I hope she learns that regardless, what other’s do, it’s important to be grateful and let people know who you feel about them or what they have done for you.

Happy Weekend! We’ll see you on Monday!

Third Grade: Day 124

Thursday already and another week is almost behind us! It’s crazy to think it’s almost time for Spring Break!

We started a new book today;

2015-03-20 003_edited-1

Justin Morgan had a Horse” by M. Henry.
Isabel is really enjoying this one.

The 2 states we worked on today are Missouri and Alabama:

2015-03-19 002_edited-1

She is starting to enjoy doing this activity.

Great job!

We had another great day in math. She’s a trooper!

  • estimate quotients
  • understanding parentheses
  • properties of addition

She has worked hard on learning multiplication and long division. Properties of multiplication and division was hard to understand (for both of us) but she has has caught on so quickly, I am so proud of her! We’ll be back at it on Monday, learning new concepts and getting closer to our goal!

Third Grade: Day 123

Today was a good day in the classroom. Isabel was a roll! We got all our work completed, even the extra work from yesterday!

In the classroom:

We started our morning with our daily Bible reading, 2 Kings 18:3-7 & 17-36 and 1 Corinthians 2. Our Bible reading actually tied in with our new book that we got from the library yesterday.

2015-03-17 015_edited-1

We started this great book today.
It mentions the lost tribes of Israel and some other fascinating information!

Spelling test from today was 100%!

2015-03-18 001_edited-1

Great job, Kidd-0!

Our big new math problems were the 5 math properties.

A little tough figuring out but after today, she should have them mostly understood.

2015-03-17 030_edited-1

This example from the internet gives great examples of the math properties.

I’ve also been giving her a “five-minute multiplication frenzy” test. She gets 5 minutes to fill in the multiplication facts. We’ve been doing this about a week now and her knowledge of them has really improved! Thank you “Math-Drills.com” for the great worksheets in math!

2015-03-18 002_edited-1

She almost got finished!
So close, we’ll do it again tomorrow and see if she can get them all correct.

I keep telling her I don’t care if she finishes, I want them correct THEN we can work on finishing and filling the chart.

Third Grade: Day 122

Tuesdays are becoming our lite classroom days. With piano in the morning, I have gotten into the habit now of clearing most of the work from our schedule for the day. It makes for a less stressful day and if all the work doesn’t get finished, we just bump it to Wednesday or Thursday. It’s great! Tuesdays make for great days to get to the library.

I review books online and place them on hold the night before and then pick them up the following day! It’s so awesome!

This weeks selection of books are:

This book is full of great poetry!
I was reading it aloud before dinner tonight.

2015-03-17 014_edited-1

This book looks very interesting and it goes along with our new book for the week.

2015-03-17 015_edited-1

This book is very cool as it lists all the Native Americans that were along the trail.
It too goes along with our new book for the week and our Indian Prayer Journal that we have been doing all year!

2015-03-17 016_edited-1

This one I got just for fun.
The pictures are great!

2015-03-17 017_edited-1

This one is another FUN book.
I am already picturing some great things happening in the kitchen!

Spelling test from today.
Fantastic job!

After piano lessons:

I have really been focusing on math lately. Learning the multiplication tables, new language and concepts. It’s been tough but Isabel is getting it with review after review after review. Today we worked on multiplication tables, division by 2,3, 4, 5, 10 and 11, perimeter and making change. She enjoyed making change and she is making great progress in division as she continues to working on learning her multiplication tables.

Working out the problem on the board.
We use paper and the dry erase for working out problems.

2015-03-17 009_edited-1

Making change is fun!

After math was completed we did our 2 states for the day and then we were done for the day.

2015-03-17 028_edited-1

Illinois the 21st state.

2015-03-17 029_edited-1

Mississippi, the 20th state.

Third Grade: Day 120

It’s finally Friday!

We had such a good week and we got so much accomplished! Isabel is improving on her multiplication facts, she still struggles with 7, 8, 9 and 12 but she’s getting better! I found this awesome website that let’s you print free math worksheets. I’ve been giving her worksheets to do daily on her multiplication tables. So great.

We started class late today but we all needed the rest after arriving home from the R.and W.R.S. late last night.

In the classroom:

Since I knew ahead of time that we were going to the concert, I was able to plan for a lighter day today.

We opened with Bible and continued the stories of Elisha in 2 Kings 5:1-9 and in Acts 28:17-31 we finished with Paul ministering in Rome.

Listening to Jamie while she doing her lessons.

After Bible, we moved onto her memorization poem. It’s been 3 weeks and she’s gotten more then half of it memorized. I’m so proud of her and her hard work! Today I had her practice the whole poem with me recording her. So she can see and hear how she sounds. She forgot to say the name of the poem and the author at the beginning. She also spends a lot of time playing with her fingers and her shirt. Otherwise she did a great job. Next week we’ll add another section of the poem to memorize.

After the poem we did our daily spelling test.

2015-03-12 038_edited-1

Missed 2 words today: volunteering and career.
I just love her cursive writing and she’s enjoying doing it more!

After spelling we moved onto this week’s dictation passage from Psalm 27:1,5.

2015-03-12 037_edited-1

Again, her penmanship is just lovely!

We then went to lunch. We had a quick lunch with Daddy before he headed back to the office for meetings over-the-phone. When lunch was finished, we did our reading in “The Candymakers” by W. Mass and “From Sea to Shining Sea” by P. Marshall and D. Manuel.

While I was reading “The Candymakers“, I had Isabel draw some from the book or relating to the book. She spent her time making her own candy creations on paper.

2015-03-12 036_edited-1

She said her favorites would be the “fruity-pops” and the ???

Later in the afternoon we worked on math and did a 5 minute speed test on multiplication facts.

2015-03-12 035_edited-1

She was mad at herself because she got few problems completed than yesterday.
I reminded her it’s not about getting more boxes completed and filled it’s about learning the problems.

After all her school work was finished, she sat down to practice the piano and than spent some time riding down the stairs on her rump! Enjoy the weekend ahead and we’ll see you on Monday!

Third Grade: Day 118

We have been working hard this week on getting our work completed for Thursday this week. With the concert tomorrow, we are ready for it!

In the classroom:

In Bible, Paul has been shipped wrecked and Elijah has been taken up to heaven.

After reading the story of Elijah, Isabel said she, “Would like to part water the same way Elijah did, to get around puddles.” I said “Well, why would you want to do that, you always walk right into the middle of them!” She then said, “Well, it would help for when I walk in the middle of a puddle and the water goes over the top of my boots. Then I have soggy socks and boots inside.” We had great laugh together. Silly girl.

After Bible we focused on math and “input/output” multiplication and division tables. We worked on tables for about an hour and she finally seemed to understand how they work. We’ll go over then more to get a better understanding before moving on. Her understanding of the multiplication tables has improved greatly since last week. So proud of her hard work!

Third Grade: Day 114

Today went by so fast that I can’t believe it’s evening and it’s bedtime!

It was a day of writing and we used every minute of it! We did take a brisk walk around the neighborhood to get our thoughts together and get the brain “juices” flowing. It helped, she was more focused and I got my heart rate going. It was a great morning for a walk.

In the classroom:

Today’s assignment was for Isabel to write a paper about the “Constitution”.

She had 3 Bible lessons to complete today from our Bible reading.

Paul goes to King Agrippa.
This one she colored the next 2 she didn’t want to.

Ravens feed Elijah.

2015-03-05 009_edited-1
Elijah helps a widow.

We also fit in our daily spelling test.

2015-03-05 010_edited-1
The one word she missed, we were shocked because she heard me use it in a sentence. She was making a joke about having 2 “beards” while she was writing the word and got it wrong. Guess she got to caught up in her joke to realize she spelled it wrong.

While she was working on assignment, I was looking at next years curriculum for 4th grade. I’m exciting about the books she’ll be reading during the year. She’ll be excited about all the science that’s included. It’s going to be another awesome year of reading and expanding our minds that God has given us. Looking forward to 2015-2016 and 4th grade!

Third Grade: Day 113

In the classroom:

Today Isabel had to make up her own Preamble to our house. She struggled with it a bit and after some help, she finally got the ball rolling on the assignment.

Preamble for the Espinoza house.

Today, we are adding 2 states to our states book and 1 of the states was one of the original 13 colonies (actually it was the first!). This state was added into statehood on March 3rd and it’s Florida (1845) and on December 7, 1787 Delaware entered the union. Delaware was actually the first state added to the United States of America!

Happy 228 years of statehood Delaware!

While I was reading “Carry on, Mr. Bowditch”, I had Isabel draw another photo from the book. She did a great job!
