Second Grade: Day 54

Today is Wednesday, Honor’s Chapel, parent/student lunch and library.

Honor’s Chapel is a special Chapel where the school honors the kids for their academic achievements and other areas from last quarter.

For Honor’s Chapel, Isabel wore her new dress from Grandpa!

She loves this dress because it’s long in the back.

The assembly…

Isabel was awarded for perfect attendance and academic achievement (honor roll).

Second Grade: Day 52

Today is Monday and it’s a normal full week of school!

Today is music class with Mr. G. Isabel didn’t fill me in about what they did today.

This week’s Bible verse is…

“You shall have no other gods before me.”
“You shall not make for yourself an idol.”
“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.”
“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.”

For the next 2 weeks the class will be going over rules; rules at home, rules at school, and rules in the community. They will be using the Ten Commandments to liken to the rules that are established at home. Just like the Ten Commandments, or God’s rules, provide safety and efficiency of an entire nation. Rules in the home provide safety and efficiency in the home. Sounds like a great lesson!

The Bible verse ties in with the Bible lesson for the week which is the 10 commandments.

S.a.T. (show and tell) for the week is to share something you are thankful for. However, we didn’t discuss it before school, so hopefully she shared something she’s thankful for (she didn’t – no one did).

The spelling words for this week are…

bar
jar
star
farm
harm
charm
dark
remark
sparkle
alarm
fourteen
source
between
enough
idea
announced: made something known to many people
arrived: came to a place
glum: sad, gloomy
members: those who belong to a group
rebuild: make something again

Language arts this week is proper nouns and “Lemonade for Sale“.

Social studies this week is begin the lesson on Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving.

Classwork…

Isabel brought home so much paperwork, there is no way that I am going to post it all here! I will post the highlights.

Last week’s S.a.T. (show and tell) was about Grandparents. Isabel had to fill out this small booklet about them. She had to call them on the phone and ask them questions about when they were kids. She really enjoyed talking to them on the phone (always does) and hearing their answers about when they were her age.

The booklet below is from a project (early book report?!) they did over several weeks about a book they read together in class. Teacher Mrs. A had them complete the booklet at their own pace, there was no time limit. They were told to draw pictures and write a title for each page about the book.

Isabel did a fantastic job on her booklet but needs to keep up the enthusiasm and momentum to the end of the project. As you can see by the end of her project, she isn’t putting as much effort into it as Teacher Mrs. A had hoped she had at the beginning. Teacher Mrs. A and I had talked about this booklet during parent/teacher conferences last week.

Second Grade: Day 51 – Half Day

Today is Friday and it’s the last day of the half days.

Isabel said she had a good day but recess was cold.

Today’s Bible test was done differently then past tests. Instead of having to write out the whole verse from memory, today they had to fill in missing words from the verse. Isabel said she thought this was more fun then having to write out the whole verse.

Second Grade: Day 50 – Half Day

Today is Thursday and it’s another half day at school.

This week the after-school care has been collecting boxes for “Operation Christmas Child”. We decided to do 2 boxes for 2 girls Isabel’s age. So last weekend we got all the items and this morning we turned our boxes in at school. We’ve been praying over our boxes and will continue to do so for the girls that receive our gifts. What a blessing! Isabel enjoyed picking out the items from the list and I enjoyed watching her and teaching her this important lesson of giving!

We did learn a few things this year and look forward to doing it again next year!

No P.E. today and Isabel was a little disappointed about that but she did perk up when we had lunch with Daddy though.

Second Grade: Day 49 – Half Day

Today is Wednesday and it’s Grandparents day Chapel. It’s also another half day!

This morning I got a picture of her Chapel wear.  She has grown so much that her dress has gotten to short (in the picture it looks even shorter) to wear to school alone. She now has to wear leggings with.

She said she looks like a frog with all the green she’s wearing. I said she looks very nice.

2013-11-13 004_edited-1

It’s not the greatest (grainy) picture but it’ll work.

The Grandparents chapel was a great surprise! All the classes from child care through sixth grade did something for all the grandparents there. It was so sweet to see the little ones sing or recite a poem. Great blessing!

Isabel’s class did an acrostic and a poem (I have asked Teacher A for both).

I have the whole thing on video! I can’t share it here because it’s so large of a file but will share it somehow…

2013-11-13 006_edited-1

Isabel is the “G” in Grandparents.
She said, “Grandparents are great for giving you love.”

(I took this photo while I was still trying to record the video, which was hard with only one hand.)

The message was given by Pastor C, who is the lead Pastor at the church at school.BookFair2013-001_edited-1

Afterward, I was able to pick Isabel up (remember half day!) and we headed to the book fair in the gym!

2013-11-16 015_edited-1

I purchased this interesting book for her about scientists.

2013-11-16 016_edited-1

Isabel purchased these 2 books for herself with her commission monies.

Classwork…

Since it was a half day again, they didn’t do much work in class.

Second Grade: Day 48 – Half Day

Today is Tuesday and it’s a half day!

This week is:

  • parent/teacher conferences, so it’s half days all week! My time with Teacher Mrs. A was today (see below).
  • it is also the annual book fair in the gym too.

BookFair2013-001_edited-1

Isabel said they didn’t do any work in class today! They practiced for tomorrow’s Grandparents Chapel, toured the book fair, went to A.S.O. (All School Open) and went to recess.

This week’s Bible verse…

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and
good deeds…let us encourage one another.”
– Hebrews 10:24-25

For S.a.T. (show and tell) they were given a booklet to fill out about grandparents. She had to fill out a family tree and then had a few questions to ask 1 grandmother and 1 grandfather. She called each set and enjoyed a long conversation with each. I thought it was a great assignment! I’ll post the assignment when I get it back from Teacher Mrs. A.

~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~ ~~

My parent/teacher conference was this afternoon.

Isabel is going a great job in second grade. She needs to work on consistency throughout her work. She starts off strong and by the time she gets to the end, she isn’t putting as much effort in her work.

2013-11-12 005_edited-1

She isn’t graded on her work but gets a number based on overall achievement and effort.

2013-11-12 006_edited-1  MAP testing results from October’s 2013 testing.

This shows her growth since October 2011 testing. She’s been tested 7 times. Isabel is the top dark blue line. The orange middle line is the district school average and the light blue line is the normal average.
