We got through all of yesterdays few extra things and we were able to get all of today’s work completed but our 2 state studies completed for the day!

She missed the “e” in strangely.

2015-03-25 006_edited-1

Working on her math skills.
Today’s focus was time and money.

5-minute frenzy:

2015-03-25 009_edited-1

A new sheet and she only missed 2.
Great job!

Daisy came to hear her play…

and stuck around for the whole half hour of practice play.
So cute.

Third Grade: Day 127

Today is an exciting day for Isabel.

She is starting a new class called “Play-Well TEKnologies®” it’s a Lego® based engineering class after school. Sounds very interesting and we’ll see what it’s like this afternoon. Before we get there though we need to get our classwork completed. (see below)

In the classroom:

No piano class today – Ms. G is on spring break with her family.

We started our day with Bible reading in Isaiah 2:10-22 and 1 Corinthians 6:12-7:24.

We are continuing our journey across the Louisiana purchase with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. We have met several new Indian tribes and several we have already studied about or prayed for in our evening devotionals. It’s been great. We have made it to what is present day Montana.

Isabel is working hard at learning her poem about Paul Revere. Next week is the big reveal and presentation. Will she be able to recite the whole thing? I think she will but you’ll have to wait and see.

In math we covered several areas in subtraction, geometry, division, fractions and multiplication. She was on a roll!

5-minute frenzy:

2015-03-25 003_edited-1

She’s got them all correct!
That’s what matters most!

Spelling test:

2015-03-24 002_edited-1

Great job.

Play-Well TEKnologies®” class:

2015-03-25 001_edited-1

The class is offered through Isabel’s old school and my former employer.

2015-03-24 003_edited-1

Listening to the instruction for the day.

There are about 12 kids in the class (various ages).

2015-03-24 007_edited-1

Getting their parts for what they are going to build.

2015-03-24 009_edited-1

Isabel asking for some help from the teacher. I believe she was the only new-comer, all the other kids were in the last class that was offered.

2015-03-24 030_edited-1

Her battle bot she made. She was proud of her accomplishment and she had a lot of fun!

Until next week…

Project: Kitchen Lights – We Have Light

Gino got the 4-inch canisters and lights in and now we have light! Thank you for the lights, Gino!

Our kitchen looks bigger and it’s so much brighter. No more dark corners.

2015-03-23 013_edited-1

 Getting wired.

2015-03-23 018_edited-1

The lights are in and it looks awesome!
Don’t mind the mess.

2015-03-23 031_edited-1

Later, I got more photos after he started patching up the old light holes and stuff.

2015-03-23 032_edited-1

Look at that coverage!

2015-03-23 042_edited-1

Looking across the dining room into the kitchen. The area is just awash in light!

Part 1 is completed and and now he’ll finish up wiring and adding the new switch plate. Then it’s onto the next project!

Project: Kitchen Lights

Now that he’s got the hallway completed it’s time to do the kitchen. We’ve been living in the dark for so long it’s time for an upgrade! I’m really excited to see how this project turns out.

2015-03-22 004_edited-1

Look at all that tape!

The tape is the location of a floor joist, where a new light will be, exhaust vent and where duct work is located. That tape is three days of work. He’s been moving the location of the lights for 2 of those days. Last night he said he has the location set and it’s time to drill. This is getting exciting!

2015-03-22 005_edited-1

The position of the new lights is a bit off in this photo. I tried to get it centered but didn’t.
Also the cut out on the wall is a new switch plate for the new lights.

The above lights will be in a walk-way between the refrigerator, island (new) and the pantry (left side, white doors).

2015-03-22 007_edited-1

Location of all the new lights in the kitchen.
When all the holes are drilled I will take another photo.

2015-03-22 015_edited-1

The first hole being cut.

2015-03-22 021_edited-1

Uh, Oops, that’s not supposed to happen!
The “foot” of the blade gouged the drywall. Will need to be repaired.

2015-03-22 023_edited-1

Looking in the hole with his new camera, which has been very handy this whole process.

2015-03-22 027_edited-1

Three holes completed and several more to go before the wiring can begin.
The spacing looks off in this photo too. Will really try next time to get it better.

2015-03-22 029_edited-1

Looking westward at the new light holes.

Later this evening…
(with the power down)

2015-03-22 078_edited-1

Just after Isabel went to bed, Gino got all the wire pushed through for each new light.
The 2 holes where the old lights were located will be patched and covered over.

2015-03-22 079_edited-1

Looking north-west, kitchen light placement looks great.
Tomorrow he will add the canister’s and we’ll get the lights and switch the power back on!

Pine Siskin

We think this little bird has been hanging out around our house for several weeks now getting food out of the feeder.

Since I took the feeder in the other day, Isabel wanted to feed the birds and our little bird friend.

2015-03-21 003_edited-1

The bird was in our Japanese maple and Isabel was able to get it to hop onto her bowl of bird food.
She’s so proud of herself.

2015-03-21 018_edited-1

The bird ate for a long time at the bowl.
As the little bird is eating, Isabel is singing softly to it.

2015-03-21 027_edited-1

Isabel walked the bowl and bird over to the patio table.

2015-03-21 036_edited-1

A Pine Siskin is a member of the Finch family.
Isabel told us later that the bird flew away just after I went out to take photos of it. She tried again later to get the bird to come back to the bowl but it wouldn’t.

Kids Clinic: Kite Building

This morning we headed to the local hardware store for a kids clinic that was being offered for free.

2015-03-20 007_edited-1

Getting her “bag/kite” colored.

2015-03-20 008_edited-1

Daddy helping with directions and what needs to happen next.

2015-03-20 010_edited-1

Trimming away the extra parts of the page.

2015-03-20 013_edited-1

This gentlemen is from the Official Northwest Kite Club or Association (he does kite flying at Long Beach at the Kite festival that we went to several years ago – he’s been doing it for over 20 years!) and he was there to help with the string and making sure the kite was balanced.

2015-03-20 015_edited-1

All finished.

2015-03-20 017_edited-1

In the parking lot she got it up with some help from the breeze!

Third Grade: Day 125

It’s Friday! Looking forward to the weekend and a break from the books (and MATH – I’m not the greatest at math but I’ve been proud of myself and my ability to teach Isabel what she needs to know this week). I’m also so proud of Isabel and all her hard work from the week.

We’ll take a break from the math and just go over simpler concepts and review.

We had a great week and got all our work finished and were able to read further in our Friday book “The CandyMakers”!

2015-02-26 008_edited-1

Both of us enjoy this book and it’s twists and suspense.
We are both full of theories how it’s going to end and we look forward each week to reading it!

Spelling test:

2015-03-20 002_edited-1

She didn’t realize that “arrange” had 2 “r‘s”

Dictation passage:

2015-03-20 001_edited-1

Again beautiful work!
The passage is from Psalm 57:7-11

Five-minute frenzy:

2015-03-20 004_edited-1

I haven’t even gotten around to grade it yet!

I got some mail! Yesterday, Isabel had an assignment to write a thank-you note to someone. She wrote one to me.

2015-03-20 005_edited-1

Even though she has done these before, it’s great practice for her.

Most people don’t write such personal and heart felt correspondence anymore. I hope she learns that regardless, what other’s do, it’s important to be grateful and let people know who you feel about them or what they have done for you.

Happy Weekend! We’ll see you on Monday!

Third Grade: Day 124

Thursday already and another week is almost behind us! It’s crazy to think it’s almost time for Spring Break!

We started a new book today;

2015-03-20 003_edited-1

Justin Morgan had a Horse” by M. Henry.
Isabel is really enjoying this one.

The 2 states we worked on today are Missouri and Alabama:

2015-03-19 002_edited-1

She is starting to enjoy doing this activity.

Spelling test:

2015-03-19 001_edited-1

Great job!

We had another great day in math. She’s a trooper!

  • estimate quotients
  • understanding parentheses
  • properties of addition

She has worked hard on learning multiplication and long division. Properties of multiplication and division was hard to understand (for both of us) but she has has caught on so quickly, I am so proud of her! We’ll be back at it on Monday, learning new concepts and getting closer to our goal!
