Third Grade: Day 98

Have you noticed that we have almost reached our 100th day of school @ home? We should have a celebration!

If you think about it we have just 4 months of school left before the year ends. Wow! That is totally unbelievable!

Back in the classroom we have been studying hard and getting things done. Just today, we finished 2 of our books we’ve been reading.

Toliver’s Secret” by E.D. Brady

Today’s special assignment was for Isabel to draw a picture for the “The Cabin Faced West”

She drew the cabin, the road (which plays a key part in the book) and the corn field.

Yesterday during our science assignments Isabel had to make a greenhouse from her seedling nursery from day 1 of our radish studies. I forgot to take a completed picture of it, see below.

We are adding more plants to our greenhouse today.

Greenhouse outside.

Greenhouse inside.
We “planted” 4 seeds yesterday and they have already sprouted!

The labels that she added to the “plant bed” (paper towel) will be the new location for the seedlings we add from our other experiments. By the time we finish our radish science, this greenhouse will be completely full of radish plants (hopefully).

Back to the greenhouse in a minute; our first assignment for today is to “turn the lights” on from our assignment #6.

Assignment #6 environments; with light and without light.

We took some measurements, discussed her findings and Isabel made a prediction about the plants without light.

What color is the hypocotyl? the stem? the cotyledon?
How high are your seedlings in the light?
What is chlorophyll? Where does it come from?
What is photosynthesize?

Inside the “with light” environment, these seedlings are growing health and are ready to transplant to the greenhouse.

What about the seeds/seedlings without light…

Peeling off the tape and removing the foil reveals a big surprise for Isabel.

What do you predict happened in the dark? See below…

2015-02-11 012_edited-1

Her eyes her tell a story, she’s surprised!
Her prediction from assignment #6 was that they weren’t going to grow.

However her prediction just before opening the foil was that the seeds had sprouted and they would be small in size. Let’s see if she’s right about of her predictions…

They grew!

2015-02-11 015_edited-1

Inside the “without light” environment, these seedlings are growing health but their are some things that are different…

2015-02-11 016_edited-1

Comparing and observing the 2 different environments.

2015-02-11 021_edited-1

Side by side these 2 environments look very similar however the one on the right is missing the light to help it make chlorophyll. Without it the plant would continue to grow but it wouldn’t thrive and it would eventually die. So we’ll place it in the greenhouse and in the light.

Will they thrive, warm in our greenhouse with food, warmth and light?
We’ll have to see…
